The following projects have transportation components, but may also serve recreation, economic development, stormwater management, and/or other needs. These projects may be in different stages of development such as planning, design, right-of-way, and construction and are subject to budget appropriations. The scheduled completion dates are tentative.

Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan Update - Harrisonburg's Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan provides a framework for enhancing the safety and attractiveness of walking and biking through on- and off-street improvements and public programs. The current Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan was adopted in 2010 and is now being updated for 2016. Learn more.
Bluestone Trail - In partnership with James Madison University, design and construct a new shared use path (for bicyclists and pedestrians) on JMU campus from Sonner Hall to Carrier Drive. Learn more.
Downtown Streetscape Phase III - This project includes replacement and enhancement of downtown sidewalks on the west and east sides of N. Main Street between Elizabeth Street and Wolfe Street. Stamped asphalt crosswalks and signal replacements at both intersections. Learn more.
Mt. Clinton Pike Road Improvement Project - This project includes the design and construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Mt. Clinton Pike, Park Road, and Chicago Avenue, and also a road improvement project between the new roundabout to the intersection of Mt. Clinton Pike and Virginia Avenue. A shared use path (extension of the Northend Greenway) will also be included as part of this project. Design is currently underway. Learn more.
Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Phase IV - Major east-west connector with a mix of four and five lane facilities with bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Learn more.
Northend Greenway Phase I - This project will construct 0.6-miles of 2.5-miles of total shared use path extending from Park View area to downtown. Learn more.
Pleasant Valley Road Improvement - The Pleasant Valley Road Improvements Project encompasses Pleasant Valley Road between 0.21 miles east of Early Road and 0.19 miles west of Greendale Road and includes the replacement of the existing bridge structure over Blacks Run. The new bridge will include a 3-lane roadway, bicycle lanes, and sidewalk. Learn more.
Reservoir Street - This project will widen Reservoir Street to a five-lane facility or four-lane facility with median from University Boulevard to east city limits. Bicycle and pedestrian facilities will be added between Neff Avenue to east city limits. Learn more.
South Main Street/ Martin Luther King, Jr. Way Improvements - This project consists of the installation of both right and left turn lanes to improve safety and accessibility in this area of the City. The project is located near the new Hotel Madison and Shenandoah Conference Center, James Madison University?s Mason Street Parking Deck, and Madison Hall improvements. Learn more.
West Mosby Road Sidewalks - This project proposes to construct new sidewalks along the south side of West Mosby Road between South Main Street to Mosby Court. Depending upon project costs and funding availability, the city may extend sidewalks to Millwood Loop. This project will begin construction in Summer 2016.
Completed Projects Highlights:
Carlton Street Improvements (Roundabout) - Located at the intersection of Carlton Street and Reservoir Street and extends approximately 300 feet in each direction. The project consists primarily of the intersection being converted in to a roundabout but also incorporates improvements such as sidewalk, drainage, utility relocations, and signing/pavement markings. Chicago Avenue Corridor Study - The corridor study makes recommendations for traffic, engineering, and land use for the corridor, along with a series of conceptual engineering sketches that initiates further engineering design for future roadway improvements. The study was completed in 2013. Learn more.
Downtown Streetscape Phase II - This project includes replacing sidewalk on the west side of Main Street between Bruce and South Court Square, replacing sidewalk on the east side of Main Street between Elizabeth Street and Wolfe Street, installing decorative stamped crosswalks at intersections, replacing existing street lighting with decorative lights, replace and upgrade traffic signals, and install pedestrian signals. Downtown Streetscape Plan, Update - The goal of this update is to present a unified vision of the downtown area that synthesizes all pertinent past and working documents, as well as stakeholder visions, into a single plan. Learn more.
East Market Street Sidewalk - New sidewalks were constructed on south side of East Market Street from Carlton Street to 400' north of Hawkins Street. Funded through VDOT's Highways Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Project is currently under design. Construction was completed in 2014.

East Gay Street Sidewalks - Sidewalks constructed on the northside of East Gay Street from Sterling Street to Summit Street. Project was funded by Community Development Block Grant funds and completed in 2013.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) - Stone Spring Elementary School - The City was awarded a project grant from VDOT's SRTS Program for the construction of new sidewalks near Stone Spring Elementary School. This project was completed in 2015. Learn more.
